PARKING BRAKE CALIPER SHAFT BOOTS INCORRECTLY SEALED

    Defect

Due to improper sealing of parking brake caliper shaft boots water might penetrate inside and rust the shaft. As the result of continuous use the rust will erode into the internal caliper and the shaft becomes stuck causing decreased parking brake force. Due to improper manufacturing process automatic adjuster for brake pad clearance of rear brake caliper might not work properly. As the result as brake pad wear the clearance is not correctly adjusted and brake force becomes insufficient to hold a vehicle. In the worst case scenario parking brake will not work even though a lever is fully operated and parked vehicle may move.

    Remedy

Anti-rust coating (Fluorine) has been applied to parking brake shaft from 27/01/2016 supplied parts & the Inspection process for the caliper has been changed from 14/12/2014 supplied parts.

INAPPROPRIATE WATER PROOF STRUCTURE OF THE FRONT DECK

    Defect

Due to inappropriate water proof structure of the front deck water can drop on the wiper link. The wiper link ball joint may corrode and cause excessive wear of the resin part of the ball joint. In the worst case the wiper link may detach itself and the windshield wipers may be inoperative.

    Remedy

The water proof pad has been added to the end of wiper link rubber boot since April 1st 2016

HEAD RESTRAINT GUIDE RETAINING SPRING MAY BE FAULTY

    Defect

On Passat vehicles of a limited production period the retaining spring of the head restraint guide may be faulty because of a production problem. Because of a faulty retaining spring in an accident the head restraint may not be sufficiently secured in the guide and can come off the backrest. In the event of an accident the head restraint will come off the backrest increasing the risk of injury.

    Remedy

On the affected vehicles the left head restraint guides on both front seats have to be replaced.

TYRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM SOFTWARE ERROR

    Defect

On affected vehicles the possibility exists that there may be a software error in the tyre pressure monitoring system of some X-Class vehicles If the tyre pressure falls below the minimum level required the intended warning message may not be shown in instrument cluster as a result of this error. Driving with tyre pressure that is too low causes increased and/or uneven tyre wear and changes the steering and braking behaviour of the vehicle. This may increase the risk of accident

    Remedy

As a precautionary measure recall the affected vehicles and perform a software check/update in the tyre pressure monitor control unit.

POTENTIAL OIL LEAK FROM TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER LINES

    Defect

It has been determined that it is possible that the connectors for the transmission oil cooler lines were not pressed together in accordance with specifications. As a result the transmission oil cooler lines could work loose while driving and transmission oil could leak out. Because of a deviation in the suppliers production process it is possible that the connectors on transmission oil cooler lines from two specific batches were not pressed together in accordance with specifications. In this case the vehicle could possibly lose propulsion due to oil loss in the transmission. The escaping oil could get onto the roadway thus increasing the risk of an accident for following traffic. Also it cannot be excluded that escaping transmission oil could come into contact with hot component parts of the exhaust system and ignite

    Remedy

Check the transmission oil cooler lines and replace them if necessary

SIDE AIRBAG MAY FAIL TO DEPLOY AS INTENDED

    Defect

The front seat back pad mould (seat back cushion) and side airbag (SAB) are fitted to the seat back frame. The SAB is fitted underneath the pad mould and the pad mould has been designed with a slit that allows the SAB to deploy from underneath the pad mould. Seat back pad moulds that were supplied for after-sales use were not manufactured correctly; the slit process was not completed. When a front seat pad without the slit is assembled to the car it may block SAB deployment and may not satisfy occupant protection performance which is a non-conformance to side impact regulation.

    Remedy

Registered owners of affected vehicles will receive a notification letter that will ask them to take their vehicles to a dealership or authorised repairer for a free repair. The technician will carry out inspection to verify the condition of the front seat back pad mould and will replace the pad mould and if necessary the seat heater element and seat back cover.
